Celebrities Play for Charity

August 15, 2007 - Eight celebrities will be taking to the courts at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express on Thursday for the Celebrity Tennis Challenge, making the Rexall Centre the place to be for more than just tennis fans.

Stars of the music, entertainment, food, and media industry, as well as superstar athletes, will be competing against each other to benefit a charity that offers young children in poor families the chance to learn to play tennis.

All money from the event will go to the Jane and Finch Building Tennis Communities Committee, who will then use the funds to provide tennis opportunity to under privileged kids in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood.

Highlighting the list of celebrities for this year are National Hockey League stars Nik Antropov of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators.  Other celebs include Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, world-renowned chef Susur Lee, former NHL’er Nick Kypreos, City TV’s Gord Martineau, Canadian Idol judge Jake Gold, and Stephen Graham, Executive Vice President Corporate Marketing & Convergence Officer at Rogers Communications Inc.

The competing celebs will first participate in the Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Fastest Serve Contest.  Following that, they will be divided into pairs and will engage in a round robin to determine the winning team.  Fans who purchase day session tickets for the Rogers Cup will also be entitle to watch the exciting action on the practice courts beginning at 2:30 p.m.
