Double the Fun at the Rogers Cup

August 18, 2007 - It’s one versus two in the Rogers Cup presented by American Express doubles final as the top two seeds in the draw are set to face each other on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Top seeds Cara Black (Zimbabwe) and Liezel Huber (United States) will take on the second-seeded duo of Katarina Srebotnik (Slovenia) and Ai Sugiyama (Japan) in a marquee final that features two of the top four teams in the world.

The two pairings have played one another twice so far in 2007, in the quarter-finals at the Tier I event in Berlin and most recently in the finals of Wimbledon.  In each encounter, Srebotnik and Sugiyama jumped out to an early lead with a first-set win, but were eventually defeated by the world’s top team in three sets.  In Sunday’s final Black and Huber will be in search of their seventh title of the season while Srebotnik and Sugiyama are still waiting for their first.  However, the No. 2 seeds have reached two Grand Slam finals this year and will be tough opponents in this match.

Yesterday, fans in attendance at Rexall Centre had the opportunity to see some of the best that women’s doubles has to offer as the top four seeds in the draw were all in semifinal action.

Black and Huber advanced to their third straight final with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Nathalie Dechy (France) and Tiantian Sun (China).  Playing in only their second tournament together, Dechy and Sun were impressive throughout the week, but were simply overmatched at the end by the talent of the veteran duo.

The other semifinal played out in a similar fashion as Srebotnik and Sugiyama raced to an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over the third-seeded tandem of Alicia Molik (Australia) and Mara Santangelo (Italy), who were denied the opportunity to play in their second final in as many weeks.

This doubles final match up will no doubt be a thrilling end to what has been a successful week at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express.
