Star-Studded Monday Awaits August 12, 2007 - Great action awaits fans who are set to take in the first day of main draw play at this year’s Rogers Cup presented by American Express. The beginning of the first round will be infused by plenty of exciting competition, including an all-Katarina/ Kateryna battle, the Rogers Cup debut of a teen sensation, a feisty Israeli, and five seeded players taking to the courts. To open the day, Israeli flags are sure to be out in full force, as Shahar Peer will begin her bid to become the highest ranked Israel native of all-time. In playing No. 34-ranked Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, Peer will seek to rise to No. 14 in the world, which would be a higher rank than any of her compatriots to date. She will be joined by fellow seeds No. 10 Patty Schnyder, No. 12 Tatiana Golovin, No. 14 Lucie Safarova in the day’s action, while No. 9 Dinara Safina will headline the night session against Camille Pin to lead into the Tennis Legends extravaganza. Monday will also feature the Rogers Cup debut of teen sensation Tamira Paszek, who is a month removed from a surprising run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon, as she vies for a second round spot against Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. Meanwhile, in the battle of Kat’s, 14th seed Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia will face Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko. For the Canadian tennis fans seeking a rooting interest, a pair of all-Canadian doubles tandems will open up their draw. The Quebec duo of Laval’s Stephanie Dubois and Repentigny’s Marie-Eve Pelletier will meet Andreea Ehritt-Vanc of Romania and Anastasia Rodionova of Russia, while St-Jean-sur-Richelieu’s Valerie Tetreault and top-ranked Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville take on the all-Italian team of Roberta Vinci and Schiavone. | ||
