Great Matches Fill Tuesday’s Schedule Thrilling action continues at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express on Tuesday, with a full slate of first and second round matches on the schedule. Day two of main draw action will bring out some of the top talents from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, not to mention the best in Canadian tennis. Highlighting the night session is No. 3 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who will take on Italian Roberta Vinci on centre court of Rexall Centre. Kuznetsova has experienced success on hard courts in the past, winning the 2004 US Open for her first and only singles Grand Slam trophy. The second match of the night boasts an all-Canadian encounter. Repentigny, Quebec native Marie-Eve Pelletier and Oakville, Ontario’s Ekaterina Shulaeva will vie for a place in the second round, pitting two Canadians against each other once again after Frank Dancevic and Peter Polansky met in the first round at Rexall Centre one year ago. Pelletier will be looking to build upon her second round appearance last year, while Shulaeva is in the main draw for the first time after qualifying this past weekend. Before that happens, however, a number of other exciting matches are set to hit the courts during the day. Israel’s Shahar Peer reached the second round by disposing of Michaella Krajicek (Netherlands) in first round action. She takes on her Rogers Cup doubles partner Tathiana Garbin of Italy, who advanced to the second round after a convincing win over American Laura Granville. The contest will mark only the second time these two women have faced off, with Peer holding the advantage after defeating Garbin on the hard courts in Miami earlier this year. Another pair of Canadians are also scheduled to begin their pursuit of the Rogers Cup championship on Tuesday. Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Quebec will face Japan’s Ai Sugiyama on centre court in the afternoon. Dubois made a surprise run to the third round last year in Montreal and will need to be at her best here to defeat the No. 27 player in the world. Meanwhile, top-ranked Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Quebec, who is still looking for the first Rogers Cup win of her career, takes on Russian qualifier Anastasia Rodionova on grandstand court. | |||||||||||||||
