Shulaeva Snatches Rogers Cup Main Draw Spot

August 12, 2007 - One day after defeating World No. 115 Jorgelina Cravero of Argentina, Ekaterina Shulaeva repeated her performance on Sunday in Toronto at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express, taking out Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, ranked No. 106, 7-6(4), 6-3 to find herself amongst the tour’s elite.

Shulaeva will join compatriots Aleksandra Wozniak, Stephanie Dubois and Marie-Eve Pelletier in the main draw of the Tier I Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event at the Rexall Centre.

“These are two of my best wins, I definitely had the advantage playing on my home court,” Shulaeva commented after her match. “I just kept fighting and believing in my abilities.

A total of twelve qualifiers also made their way into the main draw including seeded players Camille Pin, Flavia Pennetta, Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Elena Camerin. Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia got the better of Toronto’s Sharon Fichman 6-3, 6-1, to prevent a fifth Canadian from making it to the big dance.

Main draw action in singles and doubles gets underway at 11 a.m. on Monday on four Rexall Centre courts.
