On Wednesday afternoon at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, Tomas Berdych (5) of the Czech Republic and Marin Cilic (6) of Croatia were blown away by the wind over Uniprix Stadium.
Berdych lost in two sets (7-6 (5), 6-3) to world no.79 Donald Young. After Berdych broke his opponent at the start of the first set, everything collapsed. He was broken twice and left the field wide open for the American qualifier, who earned his ticket to the third round.
Cilic went head-to-head against Bernard Tomic of Australia, who’s had a dazzling rise in recent months, climbing from world no.71 to no.26. It took Tomic only 69 minutes to dispose of the powerful server in two sets (6-3, 6-4). Today’s win was his first in three matches against Cilic.
Andy Murray (2) of Great Britain, who holds two Rogers Cup titles, was more successful. He earned four break points and ousted Tommy Robredo in two sets (6-4, 7-5) in just over 90 minutes. With his win today, Murray is 6-0 against the Spanish veteran.
Also today, David Goffin (13) defeated Sam Querrey and Ernests Gulbis overpowered Lucas Rosol.
