Tennis Canada and Cirque du Soleil announced on Monday an innovative partnership that will see the world’s largest theatrical company integrate with one of the country’s biggest sporting events for the first time ever. Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto will feature acrobatic performances inspired by LUZIA, Cirque du Soleil’s newest spectacle, on-site at Aviva Centre daily throughout the tournament.
Through a combination of Centre Court shows in between matches and roaming performers throughout the grounds, tennis fans will experience unparalleled entertainment in the form of breathtaking stunts, contortionists, jugglers, tennis-based comedic interactive vignettes and more.
“Having Cirque du Soleil, one of the world’s most revered brands, on-site is a very exciting fan enhancement for this year’s tournament that we have been eager to incorporate for a long time,” said tournament director Karl Hale. “This partnership brings together world-class athletic performers from both the entertainment and sporting worlds on the same stage for the first time. Guests to Rogers Cup this year are in for a real treat as our event continues to bring fans closer to the action than ever before.”
“We are excited to be featured in this year’s edition of Rogers Cup, one of Canada’s major sporting events, and to bring excitement and colours inspired by LUZIA to the atmosphere of the competition,” said Patrick Corneau, vice-president of sales and marketing for Cirque du Soleil’s Touring Show Division. “Around 40 per cent of Cirque du Soleil artists come from a sports background, so it is only natural for us to go back to the roots, join in the fun and add a unique touch to the tennis fan experience.”
Freely inspired by Mexico, LUZIA takes audiences to a waking dream, where light quenches the spirit and rain soothes the soul. Featuring a cast of 44 performers from diverse artistic backgrounds, LUZIA surprises with acrobatic performances breaking down the barriers, such as integrating rain and water to contemporary circus disciplines. LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil will be performing from July 28 to October 16 under the Big Top at Port Lands in Toronto.
