At Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina stood tall in the face of the 24 aces served up by the towering American John Isner (14) to win his first-round match in twin sets (7-5, 7-5) on Monday night at Uniprix Stadium.
Indeed, the two sets looked a lot alike. At 5-5 in the first, del Potro converted his only break point to take a 6-5 lead and win on serve.
In the second, Isner was broken again at 5-5 on del Potro’s fifth break point.
Canadian Milos Raonic (7) found out who he will face in his second-round match on Wednesday. Adrian Mannarino of France was ruthless as he disposed of Daniil Medvedev of Russia in two sets (6-3, 6-1). Mannarino is ranked world no. 42. At only 21 years old, Medvedev is 48th on the ATP Tour.
