Sharapova Supreme on the Grass

June 13, 2005 - No 1. seed Maria Sharapova defended her title at the $200,000 DFS Classic in Birmingham, England defeating  No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 Sunday.

Despite a seesaw battle, the No.1 seeded Russian continued her supremacy on the grass. Since Birmingham last year, Sharapova has won three straight grass court tournaments and boasts a 17-match win streak on grass.

Next up for Sharapova?winner of three Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles this year?is Wimbledon. There, she will try to defend her first Grand Slam title.

In doubles, the No. 2 seeded team of Daniela Hantuchova & Ai Sugiyama defeated Eleni Daniilidou & Jennifer Russell 6-2, 6-3.
