Tough Day for Canucks at Rogers Cup Qualies


August 13, 2005 - Seven Canadians took to the courts on the first day of qualifying at the 2005 Rogers Cup presented by American Express. Despite hard-fought battles none advanced.

Oakville’s Haidy El Tabakh looked impressive for much of her match with France’s Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, but ultimately suffered a heart-breaking 6-4, 4-6, 0-6 loss after leading 6-4, 4-0 in the second set.

In other women’s action, Oakville’s Ekaterina Shulaeva was defeated by Argentina’s Mariana Diaz-Oliva 5-7, 1-6. Toronto’s Maureen Drake dropped a 2-6, 6-7 (4) match to Russia’s Galina Voskoboeva. Montreal’s Melanie Gloria lost 1-6, 1-6 to Maria Elena Camerin of Italy. St-Jean-sur Richelieu, Quebec’s Valerie Tetreault fell 3-6, 3-6 to American Shenay Perry. Toronto’s Sharon Fichman was beaten by Japan’s Ruki Fujiwara 0-6, 1-6. Beaconsfield, Quebec’s Jillian O’Neill fell 0-6, 4-6 to Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Oakville’s Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Etobicoke’s Katarina Zoricic will play their first round qualifying matches on Sunday.
