Day One Completed at the Rexall Centre


August 15, 2005 - No. 16 seed Tatiana Golovin earned a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 win over former top 20 Karolina Sprem to enter the second round at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express on Monday evening. The 22-year-old French withstood four aces from her opponent and broke serve three times to win in 1 hour, 28 minutes of play. Golovin will now play Gisela Dulko, who downed Polish Marta Domachowska 6-4, 6-1.

Other advancing seed were No. 17 Ai Sugiyama, who posted a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Jelena Kostanic. Shinobu Asagoe also advanced by defeating Wild Card Alexsandra Wozniak 6-2, 6-2.

In the last match of the day, Canadian Marie-Eve Pelletier had very little chance against Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi in her 6-0, 6-1 loss.

In other matches, American Laura Granville stopped Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1 posting her third consecutive victory here (two in the qualies) while France's Marion Bartoli was leading Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 3-0 when the Russian retired.
