Mauresmo Marvels in Rome

May 15, 2005 - French No.2 seed Amelie Mauresmo successfully defended her title at the Telecom Italia Masters Roma on Sunday, beating Switzerland's Patty Schnyder in a tough three-setter 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Mauresmo's victory marked her fifth career appearance in the Rome final after runner-up performances in 2000, 2001 and 2003.

In the semis, No. 8 seed Schnyder defeated Maria Sharapova ending the Russian's bid to wrestle the World No.1 ranking away from Lindsay Davenport.

In other WTA play, top-seeded Russian teenager Dinara Safina won her second title of the year on Sunday defeating unseeded Czech Zuzana Ondraskova 7-6, 6-3 in the final of the 2005 ECM Prague Open.

This week the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour players will compete in France for the Internationaux de Strasbourg and in Turkey for the Istanbul Cup.
