Maria, Venus Out in Toronto
Sharapova is unable to compete due to a strained right pectoral muscle - the same injury that caused her withdraw from the JPMorgan Chase Open in Los Angeles earlier this week. "Maria will be missed in Toronto, but injuries are a part of sport," said Tournament Director Stacey Allaster. "Fortunately for the tennis fans in this city, the Rogers Cup has a very deep field, including stars Serena Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo." "We support Maria's decision, and wish her a speedy recovery," added Allaster. Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will also be unable to play in Toronto while still battling the flu. Williams has been unable to practice since her withdraw from a tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, last week. “Venus will be missed here in Toronto, but injuries and illnesses are part of sport,” said Tournament Director Stacey Allaster. “Fortunately for the tennis fans in this city, the Rogers Cup still has a very deep field.” The main singles draw takes place at the Rexall Centre on Saturday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m.
