Maria, Venus Out in Toronto

August 14, 2005 - Tennis Canada announced today that Sony Ericsson WTA Tour world No.2 Maria Sharapova will not be participating in the 2005 Rogers Cup presented by American Express as scheduled.

Sharapova is unable to compete due to a strained right pectoral muscle - the same injury that caused her withdraw from the JPMorgan Chase Open in Los Angeles earlier this week.

"Maria will be missed in Toronto, but injuries are a part of sport," said Tournament Director Stacey Allaster. "Fortunately for the tennis fans in this city, the Rogers Cup has a very deep field, including stars Serena Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo."

"We support Maria's decision, and wish her a speedy recovery," added Allaster.

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will also be unable to play in Toronto while still battling the flu. Williams has been unable to practice since her withdraw from a tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, last week.

“Venus will be missed here in Toronto, but injuries and illnesses are part of sport,” said Tournament Director Stacey Allaster. “Fortunately for the tennis fans in this city, the Rogers Cup still has a very deep field.”

The main singles draw takes place at the Rexall Centre on Saturday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m.

The stars of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will debut at the world class Rexall Centre in Toronto as part of the Rogers Cup, presented by American Express, August 13–21st. Purchase your tickets online or call 1-877-2-TENNIS ext. 4333.
