Pierce Rolls to Victory in San Diego
August 7, 2005 - Veteran Mary Pierce won her 17 th career title Sunday with a decisive 6-0 6-3 victory against Japan’s Ai Sugiyama in the $1.3 million Acura Classic in San Diego, California. The No. 6 seeded Frenchwoman romped through the tournament without dropping a set.
With the win, Pierce—who reached the finals of the French Open this year—will climb to No. 11 in the rankings. This will be her highest ranking since 2001. The 30-year-old Pierce had a tough start this season, winning only 12 of 20 matches and reaching only one quarterfinal. Since then, she has turned it around, winning 16 of her last 18 matches.
