On Thursday, Simona Halep (1) of Romania booked her ticket to the quarterfinals of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank with not one but two wins at IGA Stadium.
First, because of a rain delay, she had to wrap up her match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She fought tooth and nail to finally drive out her Russian opponent in the early session.
A few hours later, Halep was back at the office against Venus Williams and posted a more convincing two-set victory (6-2, 6-2). Though the American was suffering from an aggravated right knee injury that restricted her movement, it does not take anything away from the win or Halep’s brilliance.
On Friday, the Romanian ace faces World No.6 Caroline Garcia, who has had an arresting rise in the rankings. It took her two sets (6-3, 6-2) to dispose of an inconsistent Maria Sharapova, who hit eight double faults and only 40% of her first serves and faced five breaks—a shadow of the Sharapova of her glory days.
