On Sunday afternoon at Uniprix Stadium, fourth seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elina Vesnina of Russia won the doubles event of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
They defeated Simona Halep and Monica Niculescu in two sets (6-3, 7-6 (5)) in a hotly contested 95-minute battle.
The winners follow in the footsteps of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, who won last year in Toronto, and Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, who claimed the trophies two years ago in Montréal.
Rogers Cup is Vesnina’s 13th doubles title and 19-year-old Makarova’s 7th.
The pair’s victory prevented Simona Halep, who won the singles crown earlier in the day, from becoming the fourth player to win two Rogers Cup events in the same year since Martina Hingis in 2000.
