On Tuesday night, Montrealer Françoise Abanda masterfully passed her first-round test at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at IGA Stadium.
Awarded a wildcard into the main draw at the very last minute, Abanda played a practically perfect 74-minute match against No.47 Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium (6-3, 6-2).
In total control of her returns, the Canadian dominated the contest with her power and excellent mobility. She hesitated at 6-3, 5-1 but was able to wrap things up on her fourth match point and sixth break point.
On Wednesday, she faces World No.3 Sloane Stephens of the US.
In the earlier match, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who is re-entering the Top 100, blew Kristina Mladenovic off the court (6-0, 6-1).
Shuai Zhang of China defeated Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in two identical sets (7-5, 7-5). In the last match of the day on Centre Court, 6th-seed Caroline Garcia of France came from behind to oust Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia (4-6, 6-1, 6-3).
