Simona Halep, the No. 2 seed in Toronto, has booked a spot in the third round of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. She won her opening match on Wednesday, triumphing over former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Halep is playing Rogers Cup for the first time in three years.
No. 5 seed Ana Ivanovic also opened her campaign in Toronto with a win. The Serb defeated Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-4, 7-6(4) to advance to the third round. The 2006 Rogers Cup champion will meet qualifier Polona Hercog on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals.
Sabine Lisicki, who ousted Venus Williams in the first round, advanced as well after beating Barbora Strycova in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-4. Her opponent in the next round will not be No. 4 seed Caroline Wozniacki as some may have expected, but rather 18-year-old Belinda Bencic.
Bencic upset former world No. 1 and 2010 Rogers Cup champion Wozniacki 7-5, 7-5 in a very closely-played match to set up a meeting with Lisicki. The last time these two played, Lisicki hit a record 27 aces past Bencic.
No. 16 seed Andrea Petkovic, who was pushed to three sets on Tuesday by Canada’s Francoise Abanda, triumphed over Great Britain’s No. 1 Heather Watson. Petkovic ousted Watson 6-4, 6-3 to set a third-round meeting with world No. 1 Serena Williams on Thursday night.
