In her hunt for a second consecutive crown in Montréal, Simona Halep of Romanian took a giant step in the right direction when she defeated Caroline Garcia of France on Friday night at IGA Stadium.
After 89 minutes of play, she shook her rival’s hand and celebrated her 7-5, 6-1 win. After competing in two matches the day before, Halep must certainly think the outcome bodes well for the rest of the tournament.
Hitting bafflingly masterful groundstrokes, she looked as much in command as she did when she claimed her first Grand Slam at Roland-Garros earlier this summer. She remained unperturbed by her opponent’s powerful shots, despite Garcia digging deep into her arsenal. Five breaks after the start of the confrontation, the World No.6 had no choice but to throw in the towel.
Halep racked up her fifth win in six battles versus Garcia. Clearly, some playing styles mesh better than others.
In the semifinal on Saturday afternoon, Simona Halep will come face to face with Ashleigh Barty (15) of Australia.
