Reigning Rogers Cup champion Elina Svitolina (5) of Ukraine is positively thriving.
On Friday night, she claimed her latest victim, Elise Mertens (14) of Belgium, in a two-sets duel (7-5, 6-3) at IGA Stadium.
In a bind at the start of the match after being broken twice and trailing 0-4, Svitolina was able to regroup and win six of the next seven games. Once she took off, Mertens could not catch up.
The winner of 13 career titles, including 2 in 2018 (Dubai on hard courts and Rome on clay), Svitolina earned a well-deserved victory.
She will go head-to-head against Sloane Stephens (3) of the US, who has continued to impress since the start of the week, in their semifinal showdown on Saturday night.
