In a Grand Slam final for the ages, world no. 2 Caroline Wozniacki outlasted World No. 1 Simona Halep in three hard fought sets 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 to capture her first Major title at the Australian Open.

There was much at stake in the match for the two finalists. Both were playing in their third Grand Slam final looking for their first win and the champion would be World No. 1 on Monday. And fittingly, as they have become known for, both gave it their all until the very end.

Wozniacki carried the form she showed at the end of last year, winning the WTA Finals, into Melbourne and it paid off in a big way with a career defining achievement. She becomes the first player from Denmark to win a Grand Slam and she will return no. 1 on Monday for the first time in five years.

Halep showed her resiliency and heart through the entire Australian Open, saving match points en route to epic victories over Lauren Davis in the third round (15-13 in the third set) and Angelique Kerber in the semifinals (9-7 in the third set) as she continues to chase that elusive Major.

Congratulations to Wozniacki and Halep, both former champions in Montreal, on a great tournament. We can’t wait to see them back at STADE IGA from August 3-12, 2018 for another Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
