After another impressive and consistent season, Simona Halep is looking to put the perfect finishing touch on her 2016 campaign.
With the BNP Paribas WTA Finals right around the corner, Halep and the six other WTA players who’ve already qualified for the year-end tournament were in Singapore to take part in the round-robin draw on Friday.
The players were sorted into two groups, Red and White, named for the colours of the Singaporean national flag. Making up the Red Group is Halep, American Madison Keys, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, and world No. 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany.
The 25-year-old Romanian holds a 10-7 head-to-head record against the rest of the group. Cibulkova is the only player who boasts an advantage over Halep in the H2H, having won three of their five career meetings since 2011.

Headlining the white group is Spainard Garbiñe Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic, and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska. The white group will be rounded out by a fourth player, either Johanna Konta of Great Britain or Svetlana Kuznetsova, should the Russian win the Kremlin Cup.
Halep has earned the No. 3 seed in her third consecutive WTA Finals appearance. She was a finalist in 2014 but fell to then world No. 1 Serena Williams.
This year, Halep will look to ride the momentum from a season where she went 44-16 in singles, to make a bid for her first-ever WTA Finals title.
Halep opened up 2016 by reaching the semifinals in Sydney, before adding to her growing trophy collection on the tour. In May, she defeated Cibulkova to win the Mutua Madrid Open, and in mid-July triumphed in her home event, Bucharest, versus Anastasija Sevastova.
A week later, Halep struck gold again. She dominated at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank and bested Keys in the final to win her maiden WTA title in Canada. En-route to the championship, Halep also defeated Kerber, Kuznetsova, Pliskova, and Australian Daria Gavrilova.
Halep looks to cap off her fantastic year while holding off many familiar faces from this season. The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global kick off October 23 – 30 in Singapore.
