On Saturday night, Sloane Stephens confirmed her spot in a repeat of this year’s Roland-Garros final against Simona Halep of Romania.
The American qualified for the final match of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank by ousting the current titleholder, Elina Svitolina (5) of Ukraine, in two sets (6-3, 6-3).
Dominated by the World No.3, the match went on for just over 90 minutes. The champion at Flushing Meadows and Miami, she is coming off the battle she waged against Halep at this year’s French Open final.
It has been a dream season for Stephens, whose ranking hovered around No.1 000 just a year ago as she made her way back to the game after a hiatus due to injury.
The winner of six WTA titles, Stephens fought off eight break points. She broke Svitolina five times and lost her own serve twice.
Sloane Stephens has been playing inspired tennis since the start of the week, and she will have to maintain the momentum versus the World No.1.
