Four months after giving birth to her first child, Victoria Azarenka announced her “comeback” to the WTA Tour this summer at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California.
Azarenka is a former world no. 1 and the 2010 champion in Stanford.
This will be her first tournament appearance since Roland Garros in 2016. She retired late in her first round encounter with Karin Knapp due to a knee injury. Shortly after, she announced her pregnancy on social media.
On her return to competition, Azarenka had to say:
“Becoming a mother has been the most rewarding thing that has ever happened to me and really puts things in perspective. I am looking forward to beginning this new stage of my career.”
Azarenka’s last match was on May 22, 2016. Her return to competition this upcoming July-August will end 14 months off the Tour.
The Bank of the West Classic will be played from July 31 to August 6, a week prior to Rogers Cup. The countdown to Azarenka’s highly anticipated return for the US Open Series has officially begun.
