Day 2 of main draw action continued on Tuesday at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank with several marquee players coming through tricky first-round openers.
Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic kicked off his 12th appearance at the event against talented 19-year-old Borna Coric. Coric used his speed and picturesque two-handed backhand wing to claim the first set over his No. 5-seeded opponent, but Berdych’s superior experience and steady power-hitting game saw him eventually claim a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in just under two hours.

Earlier, Alexander Zverev fell to Yen-Hsun Lu in two sets in Centre Court’s first match of the day. Zverev came to Toronto on the back of a solid string of summer results, including a semifinal at the Citi Open in Washington just last week.
Gael Monfils was also a winner on a hot and humid day in Toronto, overwhelming Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3. Fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire wasn’t as fortunate, as the 14th seed was knocked out of the tournament by 37-year-old veteran Radek Stepanek.
Tuesday’s night session will see Canadian Vasek Pospisil take on Jeremy Chardy, and world No.5 Stan Wawrinka versus Mikhail Youzhny
