Bouchard and Raonic shine at Indian Wells

Saturday, Mar 12

Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic both booked their spots in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Saturday.

Raonic kicked off the day on Stadium with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Inigo Cervantes in his first singles match since the Australian Open. A reigning semifinalist in the California desert, Raonic will next face Aussie Bernard Tomic on Monday.

Bouchard wrapped the day session on Centre Court against American Sloane Stephens in a highly anticipated second round match that lived up to its billing. With the “Great One” Wayne Gretzky watching from her player box, the Canadian won 7-5, 7-5 to earn one of her biggest victories in recent memory.

Bouchard saved five set points in the tenth game of the second set on Stephens’ serve to secure a straight sets triumph. Stephens arrived in Indian Wells fresh off her second title of the season in Acapulco. Bouchard will now meet Timea Bacsinsky of Switzerland, seeded no. 12 in the tournament.

In doubles, Vasek Pospsil and Jack Sock began their title defense with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Gilles Simon.
