Tuesday, Jul 25

The next generation of tennis stars are quickly making their way to the top of the sport and our young Canadian players are no exception. Although we know that you will be cheering for Denis Shapovalov and other young Canadian players at Rogers Cup in Montreal, we encourage you to get behind their fellow NextGen ATP stars of tomorrow. Today, we will be highlighting Jared Donaldson.

Donaldson first made headlines on the professional tour in 2016. At the US Open, after breezing through the qualifying rounds, he went on to cause two major upsets when he ousted David Goffin (14) of Belgium and Viktor Troicki (32) of Serbia before falling to Ivo Karlovic (23) of Croatia. The 18-year-old’s performances made him the youngest American to reach the third round of the US Open since Donald Young in 2006.

The rising star save his best performance for the 2016 Rogers Cup. In Toronto, he made it through qualifications and even stopped world no. 33 Fabio Fognini in his tracks. In the third round, he was unable to achieve the same result against Canada’s own Milos Raonic.

In September 2016, his results pushed him into the ATP Top 100 for the first time. He continued his ascent and reached a career-high ranking of world no. 7 in May 2017.

Donaldson began his 2017 season with a bang, reaching the fourth round at the Miami Masters 1000. In the first round, the prodigy had to fight his way back from down three match points against Kyle Edmund of Great Britain. Relying on his trusted down-the-line backhand and mental toughness, he fought off opponents including Mischa Zverev, who had surprised Andy Murray in Melbourne just a few weeks earlier.

The next gen’s objective is clear: “Winning a Grand Slam is my main goal.”

Jared Donaldson will be making his second appearance at Rogers Cup this summer. Don’t miss your chance to see him in action!
