[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The ATP World Tour is returning to Toronto in 2016 and for the first time since 2008, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will be taking place in July. The best men’s tennis players in the world will be hitting the Aviva Centre courts from July 23-31, two weeks ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
An early start means Rogers Cup will avoid conflicting with the Olympics in August and will provide the top players with their key warm-up before going for gold. Rogers Cup will be the largest hard court event in North America leading up to the Olympics. With Aviva Centre possessing the same surface as the Olympic venue and Toronto offering direct flights and only a one-hour time change to Brazil, Rogers Cup will be a stop on the circuit not to be missed.
“We took great care in planning for 2016 to ensure that we would be in a prime spot to attract the very best players in the world,” said Karl Hale, Rogers Cup tournament director. “We are now scheduled similarly to where we were in 2008, and that worked out great for us. Not only do we think we’ll see everyone here in Toronto, but we could very well see lots of the top players from the same countries signing up for doubles as well to prep for the Olympics.”
When the men were last in Toronto, crowd favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took the title. On his way to the final, Tsonga became the first player to defeat four Top 10 players at a Masters 1000 event since 2002 when Guillermo Canas did the same – also in Toronto. The No. 13 seed breezed past world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2 in the third round, ousted Andy Murray 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals, upset No. 7 seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in the semis and ended his triumphant run by defeating Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6(3) in the final.
With a stellar player field expected, including Canadians Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil, and doubles legend Daniel Nestor, the 2016 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will offer incredible tennis, top stars, and history in the making![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
